Life is busy and hectic for the vast majority of us, be it work or family. That’s what happened to me when I turned 38 beginning of this year. I started to show signs of SHOCK – BELLY FAT, BEER BELLY at the end of last year. You know, that ‘spare tire’ around your waste, not only does not look good, it actually poses danger to your health ! Besides sign of ageing, it may lead to obesity which leads further to heart disease or even diabetes and kidney failure eventually…that’s what happened to my dad now. I knew it is time that I had to do something about it or I may follow the foot step of my dad. What is the meaning of life if we lost our health even though we earn the whole world ?
I started to search for how to work lower abs the proper and effective way. I started jogging for half a year early morning early last year. Begun with daily jog and followed by alternate day job and ended up once a week jog. This was just so boring and ineffective. I then turned to gym, seeking the advice from the trainer on tips to get rid of my flabby stomach; his advice was I should hit on the treadmill with abdominal crunches. As it was worked out in gym, the motivation was there and I did it for alternate days every week. But it was too time consuming, practically I need to spend 40 minutes to travel to and fro the gym and did actual workout of almost 50 minutes. All in I need to spend 1.5 hour for each work out session. You guess it, I quited again 2 months later. - So much content to read. The most exciting part is those replacement exercises that are eye-opener. Imagine working your abs without doing crunches or long boring cardio !
- The book could be improved with some online video as some of us are a bit more visual.
My past 3 months experience
Month 1
I discovered all I did was wrong.
I changed my diet. I stopped fried foods, soda drinks, soy milk (yes, I thought it was good but it wasn’t because it contribute to weight gain !) and tofu. I ate raw nuts 30 min before meal (walnuts & almond) and it really subdued my appetite to consume fewer calories at meal, yet providing me protein, fiber and healthy fats. I started eating healthy fats with most meals, eg. raw nuts, seeds, egg yolks, avocados, extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil.
I stopped single joint exercises, eg dumbbell curls and converted to multi-joint exercises, eg squats (which increase resting metabolic rate by 7x, according to Mike). I also increase the intensity of my workout by using challenging weight that enable me to do until rep 6 and not further; which reach complete muscular failure.
Guess what… I lost 8 lbs at the end of month 1.
Month 2
I carried on Mikes’ tri-set ‘non-abs workout’ as below :
a. Renegade Dumbbell Rows
b. Front Squats with Barbell
c. Mountain Climbers on Floor
I did 4 sets of 8 reps for each exercise 5 days/week and 40minutes/session. After finishing each exercise, I rested about 30 seconds before starting the next exercise. I rested about 1-2 minutes after completing each “tri-set” before repeating.
At the end of month 2, I lost another 8 lbs and my upper abs showed, most fat on my lower back started to go. I felt great and my strength improved about 30-40 lbs on almost all of my lifts !
Month 3
Things started to happen. I need to buy new pants as the existing one is getting loose. Body feel lighter (due to strength improvement, I guess) and I can’t recognize myself in the mirror, isn’t that a new ‘me’ that looked much better than before ?
Hey ! I never thought that I would get a six pack as I started off with the intention of losing my spare ‘tire’ only….Love it !
